If a public holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, but an employee doesn't normally work on that day, do they simply miss out on any entitlement for the day? Absolutely not! In these cases, an employee may find that their public holiday becomes Mondayised (or sometimes Tuesdayised) to ensure they still benefit from it.
The key rules to keep in mind for Mondayisation are:
- For employees who would not otherwise work on that Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday must be treated as falling on the following Monday.
- For employees who would otherwise work on that Saturday or Sunday, the public holiday must be treated as falling on that day.
The diagram below shows the decision-making that goes into working out whether a public holiday should be Mondayised or not. Fortunately, PayHero can do all this for you.
Which Public Holidays Can Be Mondayised?
Some public holidays always fall on a specific day of the week (for example, King's Birthday is always on a Monday), and as such won't be subject to Mondayisation. However, many are celebrated based on calendar dates, so the day they fall on can change from year to year.
The following public holidays are eligible to be Mondayised:
- New Year’s Day (1 January)
- The day after New Year’s Day (2 January)
- Waitangi Day (6 February)
- ANZAC Day (25 April)
- Christmas Day (25 December)
- Boxing Day (26 December)
For general information on Mondayised public holidays, see the MBIE website: MBIE - When a public holiday falls on a weekend.
Details from MBIE on determining entitlements for public holidays that normally fall on the weekend can be found under the Employee entitlements section at the bottom of the page.
Processing a Mondayised Public Holiday
To correctly process a public holiday, PayHero needs to know whether the day is an Otherwise Working Day for a particular employee, as well as determine what they should be paid. With the right settings applied, Payhero can help make public holiday processing a breeze.
See the following support articles for details on how public holidays are handled in PayHero:
To check the processing applied by PayHero for any public holidays in your pay run, you can download the Public Holiday Audit Report after creating the draft pay, but before sending it.
If you'd like to make changes to an employee's entitlement after reviewing PayHero's processing, see the Manually Specifying Public Holiday Entitlements section of this support article.
